2007 Clos de Ste. Anne Syrah

2007 Clos de Ste. Anne Syrah

96 points, 5 stars - Bob Campbell, Gourmet Wine Traveller June/July 2009
"Impressive syrah with a perfumed aroma that's a mix of floral/violets, red berry, white and black pepper characters. The wine has power, a lengthly finish and a silky and linear texture."

"Youthful, single-vineyard Gisborne red, deeply coloured, with substantial body and rich, ripe, intensely varietal flavours of blackcurrants and spices.  Slighty earthy and roasted notes add complexity, with a firm backbone of tannin.  Certified organic." - 4 1/2 stars - Michael Cooper Winestate March 2009©

Clos de Ste Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep northeast facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay.  The 2007 Syrah is grown in a little bowl high up in the slopes of this estate. Protected on all sides by the topography, it faces directly into the north west and is best described as “The Crucible”.

The hand-harvested and sorted fruit was chilled, de-stemmed and fermented with native yeasts in wooden cuves after the small addition of whole clusters of Viognier grapes. A gentle brooding wine, with dense black fruits, floral violet-like notes and subtle black spices showing the characters of the long summer of 2007.
Soft and svelte the palate has an earthy wild tangent forming a backbone to balance the round, supple mouthfeel. A refined and elegant wine with plenty of time to evolve. Fined with free range egg whites from estate hens.
